11 Best Sofa Trade Programs for Interior Designers

Sloane Fang Sloane Fang

In our experience, sofas tend to involve more variables than many other pieces of furniture.

We have had clients who needed a specific size for an awkward room, wanted to use a fabric they had already selected, or needed changes to the seat depth, height, construction, or overall configuration to make the sofa work better for the space and stay within budget.

Some sofa trade programs are set up mainly for designers who want to choose from an existing collection, while others can work with you through the specification, suggest changes when needed, and build around the room rather than asking you to work around a standard sofa.

In this guide, we’ll share more about our own sofa trade program for interior designers, along with several other trade programs we regularly see designers consider.

1. Adorn Croft

Three dogs on a purple and pink Mah Jong couch with a couple

At Adorn Croft, our trade program for interior designers centers on custom furniture rather than a fixed collection.

You can bring us a finished specification, a floor plan, an inspiration image, or an idea that still needs work.

Whether you’re looking for a custom Mah Jong sofa or a bespoke Mario Bellini sofa, we can adjust dimensions, proportions, construction, upholstery, and configuration to fit the room and how your client will actually use the sofa.

Our trade partners also receive 10% to 30% off depending on project volume, with no minimum order quantity. We can work on a single custom sofa or larger furniture packages, and we accept both customer-supplied fabric and leather.

We Help Work Through the Design With You

We understand sofa construction, so our role doesn’t stop at manufacturing exactly what is shown on a drawing.

If we see a way to make a sofa more comfortable, simplify construction, reduce unnecessary cost, or improve how a configuration works in the room, we can bring those options back to you before production starts.

That can be especially useful when you have a strong design direction but still need to work through details such as seat depth, seat height, back angle, cushion construction, module dimensions, or how individual pieces should connect.

For example, take the yellow curved sofa in the center of the renderings above. We brought the client’s vision to life by customizing the backrest height and seat depth to match their body proportions and preferred sitting style.

Here’s how the finished sofa turned out.

We work in sync with your design process rather than taking it over. You still control the direction of the project and the relationship with your client; we provide the construction and manufacturing input where it is useful.

Custom Sofas for Awkward Spaces

Trade project with a designer with a request for a custom Mah Jong sofa with velvet cushions fitted into a sunken living room

We have worked on projects where a sofa needed to stop precisely before a doorway, fit into a sunken living space, wrap around an unusual corner, leave space for another piece of furniture, or sit over a floor vent without blocking the airflow.

We have even created an unusual “pizza” sofa for a fully custom project in Italy.

But these are exactly the kinds of requests we love. We had a lot of fun working closely with the client to get every angle and measurement just right. It’s where we shine.

For another project in Arroyo Grande, California, we worked with Brandye and her spouse, who are both architects.

They had a very specific vision for an L-shaped sofa that needed to fit around a balcony door, floor lamp, and floor vent. We customized the dimensions and created a raised teak base with ventilation gaps so the sofa could fit their unique layout without blocking airflow.

While each of them chose a different sofa, they all have one-of-a-kind couches that get compliments. And “top-notch” support from design to production.

So if you are working with a difficult floor plan, you can send us the room dimensions and the constraints you are trying to solve.

We can help work through the configuration before the sofa goes into production.

Work Within the Client’s Budget Without Losing the Original Idea

A custom specification can sometimes exceed the project budget.

When that happens, we can review the construction, materials, dimensions, and other details to adjust costs without abandoning the design.

For example, there may be a more economical construction method, a different material that delivers a similar result, or a small specification change that lowers manufacturing costs without noticeably changing the finished sofa.

This gives designers another option before going back to the client with a completely different piece.

It can also help you keep the project within the client’s budget while leaving enough room in the project economics for your studio.

Use Your Own Fabric or Leather

If you have already specified the upholstery, you don’t have to start over with our fabric library.

We accept Customer’s Own Material (COM) and Customer’s Own Leather (COL), and our team can review the material, calculate the required quantity, and build the sofa around it.

Clients have sent us multiple fabrics they had already sourced for a single project. We can also coordinate different textiles across individual sofa modules or develop a custom-printed fabric when no off-the-shelf option delivers the result you need.

Trade partners also receive a designer fabric kit with swatches, finishes, and samples to use when presenting options to clients. Just apply for our trade program.

We Can Help With the Client-Facing Part of the Project

Designers often end up doing a lot of work between choosing a sofa and getting final client approval.

Your client may want to know why we recommended a certain cushion construction, whether a fabric will work for their household, how a custom dimension will affect comfort, or why one manufacturing option costs more than another.

We can help you gather the information you need to answer those questions, so you don’t have to research every construction detail yourself.

If you prefer to keep all communication between your studio and the client, we can work behind the scenes and provide the specifications, drawings, material information, and answers you need.

If you would rather have your client involved in part of the process, we can support that workflow as well.

From Specification to Delivery

For custom projects, we can create 2D or 3D renderings so you can review the dimensions and configuration before production begins.

Once approved, that piece becomes the production reference so we can check the materials, construction, joinery, and comfort before making the remaining pieces.

Our payment structure is split 50/50. The first 50% secures production, and you pay the remaining balance after you review photos and video of the finished piece before it ships.

We can also manage freight, duties, and delivery to your warehouse or job site, so you don’t have to coordinate international logistics separately.

With all that said, can we get to know you a little better?

2. Interior Define

Interior Define's trade program from their website

Interior Define offers a strong trade program for designers who want more flexibility than a typical retail sofa collection but don’t necessarily need a sofa designed from scratch.

Its trade program is now part of The Expert Trade and currently gives members 25% off with no minimum purchase.

Designers also get complimentary fabric swatches, tax-exempt checkout where eligible, access to contract-grade fabrics, additional sizing options, and support with logistics and shipping.

Interior Define already offers a fairly wide range of sofa customization. Depending on the collection, you can choose the upholstery, configuration, cushion fill, legs, and other details.

Trade members also have access to additional custom sizing options, which can be useful when a standard sofa is close to what you need but needs dimension adjustments.

For commercial or larger projects, the trade team can also help with bulk pricing, shipping consolidation, and delivery either to the client’s home or a receiving warehouse.

One limitation compared with working with a fully custom sofa manufacturer is that you still start with an Interior Define design and customize it within that collection’s available options.

3. Arhaus

Arhaus has a trade program for credentialed interior designers who purchase furniture on behalf of their clients. Members currently receive at least 30% off regularly priced products with no minimum purchase.

The program covers more than sofas, so it can be useful when you are sourcing several parts of the same project. Arhaus carries sofas, sectionals, chairs, tables, bedroom furniture, outdoor furniture, lighting, rugs, and décor, allowing designers to source more of a residential project from one supplier.

Arhaus Trade members also get access to a dedicated support team, fabric swatches and finish samples, and a trade dashboard to manage orders and client information. They can place orders online, in a showroom, or by phone.

Arhaus also offers a separate program, Arhaus Circle, for professionals whose clients prefer to purchase directly from Arhaus. Instead of receiving the trade discount and purchasing on the client’s behalf, Circle members can earn a commission on eligible delivered purchases.

Most customization still happens within Arhaus’s existing furniture collection, so it suits projects where one of its existing sofa designs and available upholstery options already works for the space.

4. RH (formerly Restoration Hardware)

RH’s trade program targets interior designers, architects, builders, and other professionals working on residential projects.

The company does not currently publish a specific trade discount on its public program page, but approved members receive preferred trade pricing along with access to a dedicated trade team.

RH’s trade team can help with planning, product selection, order coordination, and installation, which can be useful when you are sourcing several rooms or ordering a large amount of furniture for the same project.

RH also has a large selection of sofas and sectionals in different sizes, configurations, fabrics, and leathers. Many collections come in several depths and modular layouts, giving designers flexibility without moving into fully custom furniture.

However, you are still working within RH’s existing designs and available specifications. If a project requires an unusual dimension, a completely different construction, or a sofa designed specifically around an awkward floor plan, options are more limited than with a custom manufacturer.

5. Crate & Barrel / CB2

Crate & Barrel and CB2 share a trade program, so one membership works across Crate & Barrel, CB2, and Crate & Kids.

Trade members currently receive 20% off full-price merchandise with no minimum purchase, with the possibility of additional discounts based on volume.

The program also includes dedicated trade support, custom quotes, fabric swatches, and white-glove delivery and installation.

The range across the three brands is a key reason the program can be useful for interior designers. You can source a sofa from Crate & Barrel or CB2 and use the same trade membership for dining furniture, bedroom furniture, lighting, rugs, décor, and children’s furniture elsewhere in the project.

Crate & Barrel and CB2 also offer a broad sofa selection, including sectionals, sleeper sofas, modular designs, and contract-grade options. The trade concierge provides fabric swatches when you need to review upholstery with a client before ordering.

Customization is primarily limited to the configurations, sizes, and upholstery options each collection offers.

Designers who need a sofa built to unusual dimensions or substantially different specifications would still need to look beyond the standard catalog.

6. Serena & Lily

Serena & Lily has a trade program for interior designers, architects, and other qualified design professionals.

Trade members currently receive 25% off retail pricing, along with access to its COM program, upholstery customization, tax-exempt purchasing where eligible, and support from a dedicated trade team.

The program is particularly relevant for designers who already use Serena & Lily’s light, coastal, and transitional aesthetic in their projects. Beyond sofas, the collection includes chairs, beds, tables, lighting, rugs, and other furnishings, so designers can source several parts of a room through the same account.

Serena & Lily offers a wide fabric selection across many sofas and sectionals, and some collections are available with custom lengths, heights, depths, cushion fills, finishes, and other details through its Upholstery Atelier.

Many sofas are made to order, and designers can request fabric swatches before specifying the piece.

The program also accepts Customer’s Own Material (COM), which can be useful when you have already specified a textile for the project rather than choosing from the standard upholstery collection.

You are still generally starting with a Serena & Lily sofa design, so the program suits projects where an existing collection provides the right starting point, not projects that require a completely new frame or configuration.

7. Williams-Sonoma Trade

The Williams-Sonoma, Inc. trade program gives interior designers access to trade pricing across a large group of brands, including West Elm, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Pottery Barn Teen, Williams Sonoma Home, Rejuvenation, and several others.

Trade pricing currently starts at 20% off, with no minimum quantities. Approved members can also make tax-exempt purchases where eligible and receive help with product information, inventory checks, swatches, quotes, order placement, tracking, project management, and installation.

The biggest advantage is the range available under one trade account. The brands also offer a mix of in-stock and made-to-order upholstery, giving designers options at different price points and in different styles.

West Elm, for example, also carries a substantial contract-grade assortment for projects that require commercial specifications.

The trade team can also arrange private shopping appointments with designers and their clients, which may be useful when a client wants to see or approve products in person before placing an order.

As with most large retail trade programs, customization is generally limited to the sizes, configurations, fabrics, and finishes available within each collection, rather than allowing clients to design the sofa from scratch.

8. Montauk Sofa

Montauk Sofa has a trade program for interior designers, architects, developers, and hospitality professionals. Approved members receive exclusive trade pricing, complimentary swatches, access to price lists, and support from a sales representative.

Because Montauk specializes in upholstered furniture, the program is more sofa-focused than many larger retail trade programs. Its team can also help with custom purchases, invoices, and shipping instructions, which can be useful when a project involves more than ordering a standard piece online.

Designers need to provide professional credentials when applying, such as a business or professional license, ASID membership, or an interior design certification. Trade members must also place and pay for orders themselves rather than having the client pay Montauk directly.

Montauk states that return shipping fees apply to trade-program orders, so designers should confirm the terms for made-to-order or customized upholstery before placing the order.

9. Article

Article Pro is Article’s trade program for interior designers and other professionals sourcing furniture for residential, commercial, hospitality, and multi-unit projects.

The standard Pro program currently offers 5% to 15% off across Article’s catalog, with no minimum order requirement. Members also get Pro support, free swatches, early access to new products, and tools for space planning, including product information, CAD files, SKP files, and cut sheets.

Article also offers a Pro+ level for higher-volume clients, generally aimed at businesses spending around $25,000 or more per year or managing multi-site projects. Pro+ adds dedicated account management, priority logistics support, and additional help with larger or more complicated orders.

Its residential trade program focuses on furniture that is generally ready to ship, and Article also offers coordinated delivery and extended holds for projects that require managed installation dates.

The trade discount is lower than some other programs on this list, and sofa customization is mostly limited to the products, upholstery, and configurations already available in Article’s catalog.

10. Wayfair Professional

Wayfair Professional is a free business program for interior designers and other professionals who purchase furniture and furnishings for clients or commercial projects.

Members can get up to 15% off thousands of products, plus an extra 10% off Wayfair’s specialty brands, including AllModern, Joss & Main, and Birch Lane. The program has no minimum order quantities or spending requirements to join.

Wayfair carries sofas and sectionals across a wide range of styles, price points, and brands, so it can help when you need something that fits a particular budget or timeline without sourcing from several vendors.

Wayfair Professional also supports product sourcing, project management, consolidated delivery, and installation. Thousands of products are kept in stock, which can help on projects where the installation date matters more than a highly specific sofa specification.

Construction, upholstery choices, customization, lead times, and warranty terms can all differ from one product to another. You are also generally selecting from existing products rather than working with a manufacturer to change the dimensions or construction around the project.

11. Room & Board for Business

Room & Board for Business is a free program for trade and contract professionals that combines furniture sourcing with project coordination and delivery support.

Members get access to services such as invoicing, tax-exempt ordering where eligible, personalized delivery solutions, extended commercial warranties, and Customer’s Own Material (COM) customization.

You also get a 10% business discount, which becomes available once annual purchases reach $50,000.

Room & Board offers a broad collection of sofas and upholstered seating, with many pieces available in hundreds of additional fabrics beyond the stocked options.

The company can upholster eligible pieces in those fabrics and also offers COM customization through its business program.

Designers can also work with a project coordinator for product information, planning, order management, and delivery logistics.

For larger installations, Room & Board can arrange services such as side-marking and delivery timing to fit the project schedule.

You have less freedom to redesign the sofa itself than you would with a fully custom manufacturer. The program’s strength lies in its upholstery selection, project support, delivery infrastructure, and access to a coordinated furniture collection.

What to Look for in a Sofa Trade Program

A straightforward retail program may be enough when an existing sofa already fits the room, while more complicated projects may require a supplier that can work with you on construction and specifications.

Here are some of the main things to compare:

How Much Can You Actually Customize?

“Custom” can mean very different things from one company to another.

Some brands let you change the fabric, leg finish, or sectional configuration but keep the frame and dimensions the same. Others can change the width, depth, seat height, back height, cushion construction, arm style, or overall layout.

If you regularly work with unusual floor plans or clients who need specific proportions, check how far the company can go beyond its standard collection.

Do They Understand Sofa Construction and Ergonomics?

A sofa can look right on a floor plan and still be uncomfortable once it is built.

Seat depth, seat height, back angle, cushion density, frame construction, and support all affect how the finished sofa feels.

A good manufacturing partner should review those details and flag anything that could create a problem before the piece goes into production.

They should also be able to suggest another way to achieve the same design when a specification is unnecessarily complicated or expensive.

Can They Help You Stay Within the Client’s Budget?

Trade pricing is useful, but the discount is only one part of the cost.

If a custom sofa comes in above budget, it helps to work with a company that can review the materials, construction, dimensions, and other details and suggest ways to reduce cost.

A small construction change or a different material may bring the sofa back within budget without forcing you to replace the design with something completely different.

Do They Accept Customer-Supplied Fabric or Leather?

If you have already specified the textile for a project, check whether the company accepts Customer’s Own Material (COM) or Customer’s Own Leather (COL).

Also ask how they calculate yardage, whether they inspect the material before production, and whether they restrict certain fabrics or leathers.

For designers who work with textile houses or specify fabric early in the project, this can be more useful than having a large in-house upholstery library.

Can They Work Around Difficult Rooms?

Standard sofa dimensions do not work in every space.

A project may have a narrow wall, unusual corner, doorway, floor vent, column, window, or circulation path that limits where the sofa can go.

If you regularly work with awkward spaces, look for a company that can review a floor plan and help work through the configuration rather than simply asking you to choose the closest standard size.

How Much Support Do You Get With the Client?

Custom furniture can create a long list of questions before the client approves the order.

They may want more information about the construction, comfort, upholstery, maintenance, dimensions, delivery, or why one option costs more than another.

Some trade partners can provide drawings, specifications, material information, and construction details that you can take directly to the client. That can save you from having to prepare every answer yourself.

Also confirm how the company handles client communication. Some designers prefer all communication to stay through their studio, while others want the client involved in fabric selection or final approvals.

What Is the Process Before Production Starts?

For made-to-order furniture, a clear approval process should be in place before building anything.

Depending on the project, that may include:

  • final dimensions and specifications
  • fabric or leather approval
  • renderings or drawings
  • material samples
  • finish samples
  • prototype approval for larger projects

The more customized the sofa, the more important it is to confirm those details before production.

How Are Lead Times, Delivery, and Problems Handled?

A lower trade price can quickly become less useful if the designer has to spend days coordinating freight or resolving a problem after delivery.

Ask how long design revisions and approvals normally take, whether materials are already available, how freight is handled, and whether the company can deliver to a receiving warehouse or directly to the project site.

Also check what happens if the sofa arrives damaged, a piece is missing, or something doesn’t match the approved specification.

Find the Right Trade Partner for Your Sofa Projects

The best sofa trade program depends on how much support and flexibility you need.

For projects with unusual dimensions, a difficult floor plan, a specific fabric, or construction changes, it can be more useful to work with a manufacturer who can help you solve those details.

At Adorn Croft, we work with interior designers on custom sofas, sectionals, and other upholstered furniture, from early specifications through production and delivery. You can bring us a finished design, an inspiration image, a floor plan, or a project that still has a few details to work through.
